Cheer Box

by Baloo

So a segment in your meeting comes to an end. What do you do? Just let the “presenters” sit down. No, thats not the Scouting way.

Each meeting assign someone as the Cheer Master. Create a Cheer box, sorry don’t wish to mention names here. In the box put strips of paper each with a cheer printed on them.

At the end of a segment the Cheer Master steps forward and opens the box. When the box is open everyone cheers. When it is closed everyone is silent.

The Cheer Master then selects someone to pick out a cheer from the box.

The Cheer Master then leads the Pack in the selected cheer.

At the end of the cheer the Pack gives a thumbs up thumbs down for the cheer. If it is thumbs down then it the trash it goes.

Have fun.

Attend a Webeloree

by Baloo

Depending on where you live will determine when your District holds a Webeloree

Here in Four Peaks, Bears and Webelos get the chance to attend two Webelorees each year.

Troop 30 sponsors one at the beginning of each year, Camp Digalus. Each year there is a theme and the boys compete with there Scouting Skills to help the heroes Dr Von Silly and his side kick Digalus save the world.

In the evening, there is a fabulous camp fire. In past years there have built space ships, a sailing ship and a western town.

In the fall, the District organizes another fun packed camp. This year it was a join Webelosree and Camporeee with four Districts. By all accounts everyone had a great time.

Give your Cub Scouts the opportunity of experiencing the Outing in Scouting. If your District doesn’t organize a Weblosree or does and it is at a time that does not work for your Pack, take a look at other Districts.

Position Responsibilities

by Baloo

If we accept a position within a Cub Scout Pack it helps to know what is expected of you and what your responsibilities are.

While traveling to last weekends Scout-O-Rama this was a topic of conversation. Even though we may have been involved in Scouting for a number of years it is surprising what you can forget. Since my colleague and myself had prearrange to discuss this topic on our journey we had done some research. Of the positions we discussed our understanding of the “official” job description was close, however there were some areas that our understanding was either wrong or lacking.

So, not matter how long you have been involved find out the your positions job description. For Cub Scout Leaders you can visit the Boy Scout of America web site at the following url.

Sundial

by Baloo

A lot of time and effort goes into organizing booths at Scout-O-Rama. Some units do the same thing each year. Others look to do something different. Going around the various booths talking to Packs I came across this idea which would make an excellent demonstration or even a gathering activity.

Make a Sundial

The Moose Song

by Baloo

Grand Canyon Council held there Scout-O-Rama this past weekend. With one of my many hats on I attended to do a bit of promotion for my Troop, more about that latter this week.  Well as I was doing my promotion a Leader asked me about a song my Troop sang at a Camporee. It has become of there signature pieces. And here it is. The Moose Song

There was a great big moose
Who liked to drink a lot of juice
There was a great big moose
Who liked to drink a lot of juice

Chorus:
Singing whoa-oh-oh-oh
Way-oh way-oh way-oh way-oh
Way-oh, way-oh!
Way-oh way-oh way-oh way-oh

The moose’s name was Fred
He liked to drink his juice in bed
The moose’s name was Fred
He liked to drink his juice in bed

He drank his juice with care
But he split it in his hair
He drank his juice with care
But he split it in his hair

Now there’s a sticky moose
Full of juice…
On the loose… s

Have a First Aid Kit

by Baloo

Unfortunately accidents do happen.

At your meeting and activities have a first aid kit available. Make sure everyone knows its location should it be required.

Make sure Leaders get trained in first aid and that the kit is regularly restocked.

Well it doesn’t seem to be getting any cooler at the moment, but with Halloween this Friday and the start of the “Holiday” season here is a little humor.

Q: What do they sing at a snowman’’s birthday party?

A: Freeze a jolly good fellow.

Games Box

by Baloo

Ok, so meetings and activities don”t always go as planned.

For those times when a Plan B is required, have a Games Box with equipment and rules for games the boys can play.

You could include in it; balls, rope, frisbee, furry dice, cones, bats, paper, pencils, stop watch.
Use your imagination and have fun.
